I have to admit something to you up front…and I’m not proud of it!
I really don’t LOVE working out! Matter of fact, I’ve been known to do EVERYTHING within my power to straight up avoid it! If there is one area of my life where I am the Queen of excuses, it is right here!
Over the last several years, however, my health has suffered as a result of constant stress and physical inactivity. Newsflash!!! I am no longer in my 20’s! (shocking, I know!) But, I am also living in the midst of the most challenging season of my life as a wife, a mom and a brain cancer caregiver.
The last year has been especially hard on my mind, body and spirit. I feel like the Lord has been nudging me, ever so gently (and sometimes more forcefully), to get up and start moving!
Our Body is a Temple
The Lord cares deeply for our physical bodies, just as he does for our spirits. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Paul says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies”(NIV).
God did not intend for us to compartmentalize our lives and separate our mind and spirit from our bodies. Therefore, when one suffers, they are all affected. Becoming more physically active is not only important for my physical health, but its imperative for my spiritual health as well. I want to live my life, with my entire being, as an act of worship to the Lord.
Making the commitment to get physically healthy is gift to myself, my family and to my Lord. We only get one life to live and one body to live in. My heart’s desire is to make the most of both! Taking better care of my physical health will equip me to better love and serve my people.
Music Motivates
I am a HUGE fangirl of music! Don’t ask me to carry a tune but there is just something about contemporary worship music that reaches down into the deepest recesses of my spirit and touches me in a profound way! Music motivates me and moves me (literally!)
No matter where I am or what I’m doing, music is always close by. I cook and clean to worship music. I listen to music while showering and driving, and I even write with music playing in my ears. So…as I think about establishing an exercise routine, I of course need to consider the tunes I am going to work out with!
Asking friends for music recommendations, especially for working out, is always a gamble. You never know what you are going to get back (even from Christian friends). Our taste in music can be as unique as our fingerprint!
Worship music motivates and inspires me! If you are not already a fan of contemporary Christian worship music, you might be pleasantly surprised by what you hear. I would encourage you to take a listen. By incorporating worship tunes into your workout routine, you are inviting truth and life to speak into the challenging places. When your body threatens to quit, these words of encouragement will help you endure and when your mind wants to peace out, you will be motivated to persevere.
Next time you decide to go out for a walk or visit the gym, ask God to spot you and the Holy Spirit to move you!
